Horror Stories - by Liz Phair (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 288Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: MusicFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Random House TradeAge Range: AdultAuthor: Liz PhairLanguage: English Book Synopsis The two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter behind the groundbreaking album Exile in Guyville traces her life and career in a genre-bending memoir in stories about the pivotal moments that haunt her. "Honest, original and absolutely remarkable."--NPR (Best Books of the Year)When Liz Phair shook things up with her musical debut, Exile in Guyville--making her as much a cultural figure as a feminist pioneer and rock star--her raw candor, uncompromising authenticity, and deft storytelling inspired a legion of critics, songwriters, musicians, and fans alike. Now, like a Gen X Patti Smith, Liz Phair reflects on the path she has taken in these piercing essays that reveal the indelible memories that have stayed with her. For Phair, horror is in the eye of the beholder--in the often unrecognized universal experiences of daily pain, guilt, and fear that make up our humanity. Illuminating despair with hope and consolation, tempering it all with her signature wit, Horror Stories is immersive, taking readers inside the most intimate junctures of Phair's life, from facing her own bad behavior and the repercussions of betraying her fundamental values, to watching her beloved grandmother inevitably fade, to undergoing the beauty of childbirth while being hit up for an autograph by the anesthesiologist. Horror Stories is a literary accomplishment that reads like the confessions of a friend. It gathers up all of our isolated shames and draws them out into the light, uniting us in our shared imperfection, our uncertainty and our cowardice, smashing the stigma of not being in control. But most importantly, the uncompromising precision and candor of Horror Stories transforms these deeply personal experiences into tales about each and every one of us. Review Quotes "Honest, original and absolutely remarkable . . . elegant but unpretentious writing . . . There are so many things to admire about Horror Stories, it's hard to list them all. It's a memoir with an original and fascinating structure. [Phair] mostly avoids writing about her own songs, and while this may seem to be an odd choice, it's actually quite refreshing--her music, she seems to indicate, can speak for itself."--NPR "[A] uniquely thoughtful, self-aware memoir . . . bracing and refreshing . . . Horror Stories is more an archipelago of intense episodes of unknowing with the implicit understanding that life is a wayward, unresolvable business. . . . [A] rigorously open exploration of negative capability."--The New York Times "Like a batch of interrelated Phair songs, each chapter a separate and specific story, all together accumulating into an intimate self-portrait . . . with equal parts elegance, humor, and authenticity."--The Boston Globe "Liz Phair's songwriting has always had the rare quality of being short-story-like. Damn good short stories, too. Horror Stories has that unique Liz Phair ability to make you look at something you'd rather not, but once you do you're glad you did--like any form of honest art. This is why Liz Phair still is, and always will be, a threat."--Ben Folds "Horror Stories cracks open the idea of fear itself to see what's inside. Liz Phair's stories are heartbreaking and inspiring, galvanizing and contemplative. This memoir is as much about the poignant luminosity of the subjects upon which Phair fixes her gaze as it is about the darkness she shows us. Witnessing her examine the moments that have stayed with her over the years is captivating: a literary triumph by a musical icon."--Lily Brooks-Dalton, author of Good Morning, Midnight "Horror Stories is a collection of turning points, plucked free of ongoing time and their original settings. Gathered, they sparkle eerily, expanding to occupy an entire remembered year--maybe even an entire remembered self."--Sarah Manguso, author of Ongoingness: The End of a Diary "Liz Phair's Horror Stories is a deeply personal narrative about a groundbreaking musician's intense love affair with life, with all its turbulent highs and lows. It is also about those things that have sustained Phair since childhood: the wonder and healing power of nature, music, and family. A compelling blend of riveting prose and soaring lyricism, Horror Stories is as enthralling and as addictive as Phair's music."--Mira Bartók, New York Times bestselling author of The Memory Palace, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award "A debut memoir as candid as her music . . . This powerful debut will delight Phair's many fans."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) About the Author Liz Phair is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter whose debut album, Exile in Guyville, has been hailed as a landmark of indie rock. She began her career in the early 1990s in Chicago by self-releasing audiocassettes under the name Girly-Sound. The intense response to these early tracks led to Phair's signing with the independent record label Matador Records. She has been a recording artist and touring performer for over twenty-five years, paving the way for countless music artists, particularly women, who cite her among their major influences. Phair is also a visual artist who majored in studio art and art history at Oberlin College. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Atlantic. Horror Stories is her first book.

The Horror of 1888 - by Betty Plombon (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 172Genre: True CrimeSub-Genre: MurderFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Atmosphere PressAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Betty PlombonLanguage: English Book Synopsis The Horror of 1888 is the true story of two brothers fishing in a creek leading off the Sugar River in the township of Primrose, Dane County, Wisconsin, in 1888. They noticed a sack in the shallow waters of the creek and inside found body parts belonging to someone who had evidently been murdered. The identity of the murderer was soon determined, and the bloody crime scene discovered and searched, disclosing the details of one of the most horrible murders ever known to Wisconsin at that time. This book continues the story in great detail, following the murderer across the Atlantic to Ireland, where he was arrested before he could reach his native country of Switzerland, and brought back to Wisconsin for trial. It would be eleven months before an unusual confession emerged. The events of this crime and the extradition process that returned the criminal to Madison generated international notoriety. The operation of the legal systems in England and Wisconsin in 1889 are woven into the story, along with sketches of contemporary life in Dane County. The fact that the author of the book is related to the murderer just adds to the intrigue...

I write from the vantage of an ordinary guy just watching the news go by daily. Book Synopsis As it turns out, I seem to have a fairly large number of notes and blogs regarding Donald J. Trump, all pretty vociferous criticism. Not that criticisms of Trump would be of much interest to the book-buying public as books trashing Trump are a dime a dozen, written by virtually anyone who has had any administrative dealings with him (but not the sycophants he surrounds himself with now). So I've organized all these missives from before the 2016 presidential election to the present (January 2021). Many of these notes were posted on my International medical information Blog: "med-events@list.pitt.edu," that turns out to be mainly political. Others on another blog: Gonzo66.medscape.com" and yet others on my Facebook page: "Facebook/David W. Crippen." All of these notes were created in one take, most following news blogs from one source or another, posted and largely forgotten other than saving them to another hard drive folder. It is from this folder that I rescued them and organized them by date, beginning a year or so before the 2016 Presidential election. All of this is my humble personal opinion, not necessarily shared by anyone else I know, definitely not reflective any of the institutions I have been a part of in my professional life. I am retired as of 2017 but maintain some contact with some of these institutions. Enjoy these missives if you have an interest. I put a fair amount of work into tracking them down and organizing them.

Horror in Architecture - by Joshua Comaroff (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 220Genre: ArchitectureSub-Genre: BuildingsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Oro EditionsAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Joshua ComaroffLanguage: English About the Book This book looks at the idea of horror and its analogues in architecture. In these, normal compositions become strange: extra limbs appear, holes open where they should not, individual objects are doubled or split or perversely occupied. Horrifying buildings re-imagine the possibilities of architectural language, shifting from "natural" norms to other, more rarified and exciting options. They define an expanded aesthetic field that marries the beautiful to the distorted, the awkward, the manifold, and the indeterminate. Through an investigation that spans architecture art, and literature, this study attempts to limn horror through its shifting forms and meanings--and to identify a creeping unease that lingers at the very center of the modern project. "Horror in Architecture" may be read as a history, as an alternative to the classic canon of good and proper architectures, or as a sly manifesto for a new approach to the design of the built environment--one that encourages a playful subversion of conventions. To capture horror in its many guises, this study is presented in a unique manner. An introductory essay describes the historical fortunes of horror as an aesthetic idea, from Roman antiquity to the pulp films and novels of the present day. Here, the authors put forward a new theory of the sources and effects of horror in modernity and in modern architecture. This is followed by case studies of types, linking classic tropes (clones, doubles, hybrids, psychotics and the undead) to specific buildings and architectural theories. As a result, this study may be read in a number of different ways. It may be consumed as a total theoretical piece, from start to finish. Or it may provide a series of more casual readings, in the various chapters and brief presentations of the works of individual architects or buildings. Book Synopsis This book looks at the idea of horror and its analogues in architecture. In these, normal compositions become strange: extra limbs appear, holes open where they should not, individual objects are doubled or split or perversely occupied. Horrifying buildings re-imagine the possibilities of architectural language, shifting from natural norms to other, more rarified and exciting options. They define an expanded aesthetic field that marries the beautiful to the distorted, the awkward, the manifold, and the indeterminate. Through an investigation that spans architecture, art, and literature, this study attempts to limn horror through its shifting forms and meanings--and to identify a creeping unease that lingers at the very center of the modern project. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (DVD)(2002)
Movie MPAA Rating: NrMovie Studio: Gotham (Dba Alpha)Movie Genre: HorrorSoftware Format: DVDLanguage: EnglishKing of the B's, director Roger Corman shot this crazy beat-era classic in a mere two days, but it packs plenty of inspired lunacy and clever bits in its 70-minute running time. Jonathan Haze stars as clumsy assistant florist Seymour, who saves his job in Mr. Mushnik's skid-row flower shop when he brings in a unique man-eating plant. The problem is, it's a very hungry plant; every night it opens its huge jaws and demands to be fed, forcing poor Seymour to take to the street in search of victims, lest he disappoint his boss and his adoring girlfriend, Audrey (Jackie Joseph). From a zingy script by Charles Griffith, this hilarious black comedy overflows with great ideas and characters: Corman regular Dick Miller plays a hipster who eats flowers, and a very young Jack Nicholson takes a memorable turn as a masochistic dental patient. DRAGNET-style detective Joe Fink (Wally Campo) narrates as he slowly begins to track the killer down. This oft-revived favorite still generates plenty of laughs and chills, deserving of repeat viewings. A musical version debuted off-Broadway in 1982 and led to a film starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.
