The shure Large Diaphragm Condenser is an affordable tube mic that sounds pretty damn good on a wide range of sources. It may not always be the best mic for the job, but it rarely sounds bad on any source I have stuck it on. It's high SPL handeling makes it great for sticking out in front of a drum kit, or in front of a cranked Mesa Dual Rectifier. It sounds great on vocals.
