This Blessed Earth - by Ted Genoways (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 240Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: AgricultureFormat: PaperbackPublisher: W. W. Norton & CompanyAge Range: AdultBook theme: Sustainable AgricultureAuthor: Ted GenowaysLanguage: English About the Book Winner of the Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize 2019 selection for the One Book One Nebraska and All Iowa state reading programs Genoways gives the reader a kitchen-table view of the vagaries, complexities, and frustrations of modern farming...Insightful and empathetic. --Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Book Synopsis The family farm lies at the heart of our national identity, and yet its future is in peril. Rick Hammond grew up on a farm, and for forty years he has raised cattle and crops on his wife's fifth-generation homestead in Nebraska, in hopes of passing it on to their four children. But as the handoff nears, their family farm--and their entire way of life--are under siege on many fronts, from shifting trade policies, to encroaching pipelines, to climate change. Following the Hammonds from harvest to harvest, Ted Genoways explores the rapidly changing world of small, traditional farming operations. He creates a vivid, nuanced portrait of a radical new landscape and one family's fight to preserve their legacy and the life they love. Review Quotes This Blessed Earth is a sort of universal story of family farmers and all they're up against in their efforts to take care of the land and make a living from it. It's also a crash course in the history that brought us to this place of corporate power, shrinking resources, and a changing climate. But it plants seeds of hope as the next generation prepares to inherit the family land and all of the joys and challenges that come with it. This book is an invitation to all who care about family farmers--which after all is all of us, since we all eat!--Willie Nelson, founder and president of Farm AidThis Blessed Earth is both a concise exploration of the history of the American small farm and a vivid, nuanced portrait of one family's fight to preserve their legacy and the life they love.-- "Smithsonian"A history book, an economics text, even a soap opera of sorts. If we eat, we should know.-- "Minneapolis Star Tribune"A real eye-opener. Genoways presents a very Steinbeckian story: Americans struggling heroically against forces outside their control.--Erin Grace "Omaha World-Herald"Clear-eyed and unsentimental.... [Genoways] writes with authority.... [and] comes from a long line of Nebraskans himself.--Arlo Crawford "The New York Times Book Review"Ted Genoways brings a lifetime of knowledge to the complex story of modern agriculture. His depth of understanding is evident on every page as he follows the Hammonds through a year on their Nebraska farm, examining the way they are not only at the behest of traditional challenges such as weather and time, but also subject to international trade agreements, worldwide competition, and the challenges of scale. In This Blessed Earth, Genoways masterfully illustrates the costs and demands of such a life, and beautifully renders the endurance and dignity of those who have chosen it.--Jane Brox, author of Clearing LandEveryone who eats in America should read this lyrical and often heartbreaking book about life on a modern American farm. It will change the way you look at what is on your plate.--Ruth Reichl, New York Times best-selling author of My Kitchen YearFarming, family, and food all come together in this beautifully written story of what it takes to work this blessed earth.--Tom Colicchio, chef and cofounder of Food Policy ActionIn an impressive and compelling work of literary journalism, Ted Genoways dives deep into the heart of an American farm family, illuminating critical issues troubling our complex food production system. But he also describes in intimate detail the very human struggles of the work--between husband and wife, parent and child, father-in-law and son-in-law--in one family committed to growing our food and passing the work on to the next generation.--Michael Ruhlman, author of Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food In AmericaIt's not fair to claim that you are concerned about the country's food system unless you truly understand the millions of unsung conventional family farmers who produce our corn, soybeans, and beef. Genoways portrays just such a family in a book that is factual, rich in history, and filled with characters you will come to know as friends. He writes with an investigative journalist's mind and a poet's soul.--Barry Estabrook, author of Tomatoland and Pig Tales

Everybody Lies - by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 352Genre: Computers + InternetSub-Genre: Social AspectsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Dey Street BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Seth Stephens-DavidowitzLanguage: English Book Synopsis Foreword by Steven PinkerBlending the informed analysis of The Signal and the Noise with the instructive iconoclasm of Think Like a Freak, a fascinating, illuminating, and witty look at what the vast amounts of information now instantly available to us reveals about ourselves and our world--provided we ask the right questions.By the end of an average day in the early twenty-first century, human beings searching the internet will amass eight trillion gigabytes of data. This staggering amount of information--unprecedented in history--can tell us a great deal about who we are--the fears, desires, and behaviors that drive us, and the conscious and unconscious decisions we make. From the profound to the mundane, we can gain astonishing knowledge about the human psyche that less than twenty years ago, seemed unfathomable. Everybody Lies offers fascinating, surprising, and sometimes laugh-out-loud insights into everything from economics to ethics to sports to race to sex, gender and more, all drawn from the world of big data. What percentage of white voters didn't vote for Barack Obama because he's black? Does where you go to school effect how successful you are in life? Do parents secretly favor boy children over girls? Do violent films affect the crime rate? Can you beat the stock market? How regularly do we lie about our sex lives and who's more self-conscious about sex, men or women? Investigating these questions and a host of others, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz offers revelations that can help us understand ourselves and our lives better. Drawing on studies and experiments on how we really live and think, he demonstrates in fascinating and often funny ways the extent to which all the world is indeed a lab. With conclusions ranging from strange-but-true to thought-provoking to disturbing, he explores the power of this digital truth serum and its deeper potential--revealing biases deeply embedded within us, information we can use to change our culture, and the questions we're afraid to ask that might be essential to our health--both emotional and physical. All of us are touched by big data everyday, and its influence is multiplying. Everybody Lies challenges us to think differently about how we see it and the world. From the Back Cover In this groundbreaking work, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a Harvard-trained economist, former Google data scientist, and New York Times writer, argues that much of what we thought about people has been dead wrong. The reason? People lie, to friends, lovers, doctors, surveys--and themselves. However, we no longer need to rely on what people tell us. New data from the internet--the traces of information that billions of people leave on Google, social media, dating, and even pornography sites--finally reveals the truth.Everybody Lies combines the informed analysis of Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise, the storytelling of Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, and the wit and fun of Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt's Freakonomics in a book that will change the way you view the world. There is almost no limit to what can be learned about human nature from Big Data--provided, that is, you ask the right questions. Review Quotes "Pivotal . . . A book for those who are intensely curious about human nature, informational analysis, and amusing anecdotes to the tune of Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner's Freakanomics."--Library Journal"A whirlwind tour of the modern human psyche using search data as its guide. . . . The empirical findings in Everybody Lies are so intriguing that the book would be a page-turner even if it were structured as a mere laundry list."--The Economist"Everybody Lies is an astoundingly clever and mischievous exploration of what big data tells us about everyday life. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is as good a data storyteller as I have ever met."--Steven Levitt, co-author, Freakonomics "Everybody Lies is a spirited and enthralling examination of the data of our lives. Drawing on a wide variety of revelatory sources, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz will make you cringe, chuckle, and wince at the people you thought we were."--Christian Rudder, author of Dataclysm"Freakonomics on steroids--this book shows how big data can give us surprising new answers to important and interesting questions. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz brings data analysis alive in a crisp, witty manner, providing a terrific introduction to how big data is shaping social science."--Raj Chetty, Professor of Economics at Stanford University"A tour de force--a well-written and entertaining journey through big data that, along the way, happens to put forward an important new perspective on human behavior itself. If you want to understand what's going on in the world, or even with your friends, this is one book you should read cover to cover."--Peter Orszag, Managing Director, Lazard and former Director of the Office of Management and Budget"Brimming with intriguing anecdotes and counterintuitive facts, Stephens-Davidowitz does his level best to help usher in a new age of human understanding, one digital data point at a time."--Fortune, Best New Business Books"Everybody Lies relies on big data to rip the veneer of what we like to think of as our civilized selves. A book that is fascinating, shocking, sometimes horrifying, but above all, revealing."--Tim Wu, author of The Attention Merchants"Move over Freakonomics. Move over Moneyball. This brilliant book is the best demonstration yet of how big data plus cleverness can illuminate and then move the world. Read it and you'll see life in a new way."--Lawrence Summers, President Emeritus and Charles W. Eliot University Professor of Harvard University"Stephens-Davidowitz, a former data scientist at Google, has spent the last four years poring over Internet search data . . . What he found is that Internet search data might be the Holy Grail when it comes to understanding the true nature of humanity."--New York Post"This book is about a whole new way of studying the mind . . . an unprecedented peek into people's psyches . . . Time and again my preconceptions about my country and my species were turned upside-down by Stephens-Davidowitz's discoveries . . . endlessly fascinating."--Steven Pinker, author of The Better Angels of Our Nature

Computer Graphics from Scratch - by Gabriel Gambetta (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 248Genre: Computers + InternetSub-Genre: Computer GraphicsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: No Starch PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Gabriel GambettaLanguage: English About the Book "An introduction to computer graphics that focuses on raytracing and rasterization. Topics and algorithms are presented without the use of external libraries or APIs and with pseudocode that is not specific to a programming language. Includes links to interactive demonstrations for each algorithm"-- Book Synopsis Computer Graphics from Scratch demystifies the algorithms used in modern graphics software and guides beginners through building photorealistic 3D renders. Computer graphics programming books are often math-heavy and intimidating for newcomers. Not this one. Computer Graphics from Scratch takes a simpler approach by keeping the math to a minimum and focusing on only one aspect of computer graphics, 3D rendering. You'll build two complete, fully functional renderers: a raytracer, which simulates rays of light as they bounce off objects, and a rasterizer, which converts 3D models into 2D pixels. As you progress you'll learn how to create realistic reflections and shadows, and how to render a scene from any point of view. Pseudocode examples throughout make it easy to write your renderers in any language, and links to live JavaScript demos of each algorithm invite you to explore further on your own.Learn how to: - Use perspective projection to draw 3D objects on a 2D plane - Simulate the way rays of light interact with surfaces - Add mirror-like reflections and cast shadows to objects - Render a scene from any camera position using clipping planes - Use flat, Gouraud, and Phong shading to mimic real surface lighting - Paint texture details onto basic shapes to create realistic-looking objects Whether you're an aspiring graphics engineer or a novice programmer curious about how graphics algorithms work, Gabriel Gambetta's simple, clear explanations will quickly put computer graphics concepts and rendering techniques within your reach. All you need is basic coding knowledge and high school math. Computer Graphics from Scratch will cover the rest. Review Quotes If you've ever wanted to peek behind the curtain and understand how [computer graphics] work, here you've got it in a step-by-step process. . . . A nice resource to have to learn about the basics of computer graphics. . . . If you want to jump in and learn about computer graphics or get an understanding of how ray tracing works, this is a good choice. --Game From Scratch There's enough information in his book for a university course. In fact, the book is based on the course Gambetta taught before he became a senior engineer at Google. --Joy Schwabach, Arkansas Democrat Gazette's On ComputersOne of the best textbooks I have ever seen! . . . I am in awe of the simplicity of the math and science involved. It feels a lot like I am wielding magical powers that I've always thought were beyond my reach. [Gabriel Gambetta has] absolutely managed to demystify the process. I guess it's a sort of 'the power was within you the whole time' kind of moment. --/u/Grakkam, Reddit I love it. I love fundamental and foundational books like this. It's not tied to language or platform so doesn't get dated. I learned SO MUCH going through this book. . . . I definitely recommend this book if learning computer graphics fundamentals is something you're curious about.--Dylan Bennett, Curator of PiGameDev About the Author Gabriel Gambetta started coding games around the age of 5 on a ZX Spectrum. After studying Computer Science and working at a respectable local company in his native Uruguay, he started a game development company and ran it for 10 years while teaching Computer Graphics at his alma mater. Automate This - by Christopher Steiner (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 248Genre: Computers + InternetSub-Genre: Social AspectsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: PortfolioAge Range: AdultAuthor: Christopher SteinerLanguage: English Book Synopsis How the rise of computerized decision-making affects every aspect of business and daily life The bot takeover began with high frequency trading on Wall Street, and from there it spread to all manners of high-level tasks--such as diagnosing illnesses or interpreting legal documents. There is no realm of human endeavor safe from algorithms that employ speed, precision and nuance. In this fascinating book, Steiner tells the story of how algorithms took over and shows why the "bot revolution" is about to spill into every aspect of our lives. We meet bots that are driving cars, penning haikus, and writing music mistaken for Bach's. They listen in on customer service calls and figure out what Iran would do in the event of a nuclear standoff. On Wall Street, pre-programmed algorithmic deals are executed by machines faster than any human could--leaving human investors at a severe disadvantage. But what will the world look like when algorithms control our hospitals, our roads, and our national security? Is a stock market controlled by high-speed trading bots worth investing in? And what role will be left for doctors, lawyers, writers, truck drivers, and many others? Review Quotes "[Steiner] excels in bringing a dry subject to life."--Financial TimesAs readers follow Steiner in his whirlwind tour of algorithm applications, they will marvel at the versatility of a mathematical tool understood only by a small circle of experts. Readers peer over the experts' shoulders long enough to trace the decision-tree logic of an individual algorithm and to follow the cascading dynamics of the linked algorithms that drive the "bots" now handling everything from putting astronauts into space to matching compatible personalities venturing into the dating scene.... An accessible foray into computer programming that has become a hidden but pervasive presence.--Bryce Christensen, Booklist "Algorithms are affecting every field of human endeavor, from markets to medi-cine, poker to pop music. Read this book if you want to understand the most powerful force shaping the world today and tomorrow."--Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist, MIT; coauthor of Race Against the Machine"Christopher Steiner knows how to find terrific stories and tell them well. He has written a lively narrative with humans at its center. To be sure, its subject is important, but the book is also fun."--Randall Stross, author of Planet Google and The Launch Pad About the Author Chris Steiner is the author of $20 Per Gallon, a New York Times bestseller. His writing has appeared in Forbes, the Chicago Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and more. He holds an engineering degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a masters in journalism from Northwestern University. Steiner lives in Evanston, Illinois, with his family.

Sketching User Experiences: Getting the Design Right and the Right Design - (Interactive Technologies) by Bill Buxton (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 443Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: Industrial DesignSeries Title: Interactive TechnologiesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Morgan Kaufmann PublishersAge Range: AdultBook theme: ProductAuthor: Bill BuxtonLanguage: English About the Book Speaking to the HCI community and other design professionals, this work is grounded in both practice and scientific research. It encourages designers to try new methods, test themselves with the exercises and projects, and see an improvement in innovative interaction design that works. Book Synopsis Sketching User Experiences approaches design and design thinking as something distinct that needs to be better understood--by both designers and the people with whom they need to work-- in order to achieve success with new products and systems. So while the focus is on design, the approach is holistic. Hence, the book speaks to designers, usability specialists, the HCI community, product managers, and business executives. There is an emphasis on balancing the back-end concern with usability and engineering excellence (getting the design right) with an up-front investment in sketching and ideation (getting the right design). Overall, the objective is to build the notion of informed design: molding emerging technology into a form that serves our society and reflects its values. Grounded in both practice and scientific research, Bill Buxton's engaging work aims to spark the imagination while encouraging the use of new techniques, breathing new life into user experience design. Review Quotes Bill Buxton and I share a common belief that design leadership together with technical leadership drives innovation. Sketching, prototyping, and design are essential parts of the process we use to create new products. Bill Buxton brings design leadership and creativity to Microsoft. Through his thought-provoking personal examples he is inspiring others to better understand the role of design in their own companies. --Bill Gates, Chairman, Microsoft Informed design is essential." While it might seem that Bill Buxton is exaggerating or kidding with this bold assertion, neither is the case. In an impeccably argued and sumptuously illustrated book, design star Buxton convinces us that design simply must be integrated into the heart of business. --Roger Martin, Dean, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto Design is explained, with the means and manner for successes and failures illuminated by engaging stories, true examples and personal anecdotes. In Sketching User Experiences, Bill Buxton clarifies the processes and skills of design from sketching to experience modeling, in a lively and informative style that is rich with stories and full of his own heart and enthusiasm. At the start we are lost in mountain snows and northern seas, but by the end we are equipped with a deep understanding of the tools of creative design. --Bill Moggridge, Cofounder of IDEO and author of Designing Interactions I love this book. There are very few resources available that see across and through all of the disciplines involved in developing great experiences. This is complex stuff and Buxton's work is both informed and insightful. He shares the work in an intimate manner that engages the reader and you will find yourself nodding with agreement, and smiling at the poignant relevance of his examples. --Alistair Hamilton, Symbol Technologies, NY Like any secret society, the design community has its strange rituals and initiation procedures. Bill opens up the mysteries of the magical process of design, taking us through a land in which story telling, orange squeezers, the Wizard of oOz, I-pods, avalanche avoidance, bicycle suspension sketching, and faking it are all points on the design pilgrim's journey. There are lots of ideas and techniques in this book to feed good design and transform the way we think about creating useful stuff. --Peter Gabriel

Sharenthood - (Strong Ideas) by Leah A Plunkett (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 240Genre: Computers + InternetSub-Genre: Social AspectsSeries Title: Strong IdeasFormat: HardcoverPublisher: MIT PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Leah A PlunkettLanguage: English About the Book From baby pictures in the cloud to a high school's digital surveillance system, the author examines how adults unwittingly compromise children's privacy online. Book Synopsis From baby pictures in the cloud to a high school's digital surveillance system: how adults unwittingly compromise children's privacy online. Our children's first digital footprints are made before they can walk--even before they are born--as parents use fertility apps to aid conception, post ultrasound images, and share their baby's hospital mug shot. Then, in rapid succession come terabytes of baby pictures stored in the cloud, digital baby monitors with built-in artificial intelligence, and real-time updates from daycare. When school starts, there are cafeteria cards that catalog food purchases, bus passes that track when kids are on and off the bus, electronic health records in the nurse's office, and a school surveillance system that has eyes everywhere. Unwittingly, parents, teachers, and other trusted adults are compiling digital dossiers for children that could be available to everyone--friends, employers, law enforcement--forever. In this incisive book, Leah Plunkett examines the implications of "sharenthood"--adults' excessive digital sharing of children's data. She outlines the mistakes adults make with kids' private information, the risks that result, and the legal system that enables "sharenting."Plunkett describes various modes of sharenting--including "commercial sharenting," efforts by parents to use their families' private experiences to make money--and unpacks the faulty assumptions made by our legal system about children, parents, and privacy. She proposes a "thought compass" to guide adults in their decision making about children's digital data: play, forget, connect, and respect. Enshrining every false step and bad choice, Plunkett argues, can rob children of their chance to explore and learn lessons. The Internet needs to forget. We need to remember. Review Quotes Plunkett is describing a set of questions, about data and privacy, that many of us already grapple with. Yet it all seems particularly nefarious in the context of children, for whom a defining condition of life is that they are captive to forces they cannot possibly grasp.... [Sharenthood's] most gripping moments come when she imagines scenarios that seem both far-fetched and, when you think more deeply about the direction of technological innovation, a bit inevitable.--Hua Hsu, The New Yorker--Illuminating and common sense.... Reveals the alarming ways your family's data can be used and distributed, and advocates for a more thoughtful approach to how we parent your digital-era offspring.--Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon--One of 13 Must-Read Books for FallLeah Plunkett illuminates children's digital footprints: the digital baby monitors, the daycare livestreams, the nurse's office health records, the bus and cafeteria passes recording their travel and consumption patterns--all part of an indelible dossier for anyone who knows how to look for it. Plunkett thinks the offspring surveillance ought to stop and has suggestions for how to kick the sharenting habit. They are worth considering.--Emma Grey Ellis, Wired--Presents, with humor, insight, and a laudable broad-mindedness, a look at all concerns, both hypothetical and glaringly real, that parents should consider....An engaging, interesting read, one that doesn't scold but rather encourages everyone to consider their own view of privacy and press pause for just a moment before they post, tweet, swipe, scan, or upload anything.---- About the Author Leah Plunkett is Associate Dean for Administration, Associate Professor of Legal Skills, and Director of Academic Success at the University of New Hampshire School of Law. She is Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. John Palfrey is Head of School at Phillips Academy, Andover, coauthor of Born Digital: How Children Grow Up in a Digital Age, and author of the MIT Press Essential Knowledge volume Intellectual Property Strategy.

Now, in celebration of Berry's extraordinary six-decade-long career, Library of America presents a two-volume selection of his nonfiction writings prepared in close consultation with the author. Book Synopsis Everyone knows that fossil fuels won't last forever. Something needs to change at some point, regardless of whether the issue is climate change or because we need a practical replacement for petroleum as cheap supplies run out.But while headlines suggest that a green-energy paradise is around the corner, not many are aware of the immense technical challenges that stand in its way. To turn our backs on fossil fuels, a staggering amount of work will be required to refit a global energy sector that has grown systematically for over a century. News of the latest green advancements can make it seem like plug-and-play technology, and simply a matter of switching from one source to another. In reality, the challenge is far greater, and infinitely more complicated. To make matters worse, environmentalists and fossil-fuel defenders wage continuous but fruitless war, and the growing gap makes it impossible to have any sort of constructive dialogue. Each camp becomes more locked in their position with every exchange, and the most revolutionary ideas never see the light of day. Instead of building, time and money are wasted sparring.Sparing no sacred cows, Terry Etam cuts through the media rhetoric, government propaganda, and widespread ignorance of the energy sector to get to the heart of what needs to change-and what needs to stay the same-if the challenges of moving away from fossil fuels are to be met, while maintaining the quality of life we have come to expect and rely on....

Affective Computing - (Mit Press) by Rosalind W Picard (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 306Genre: Computers + InternetSub-Genre: Intelligence (AI) & SemanticsSeries Title: Mit PressFormat: PaperbackPublisher: MIT PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Rosalind W PicardLanguage: English About the Book According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions. Book Synopsis According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions. The latest scientific findings indicate that emotions play an essential role in decision making, perception, learning, and more--that is, they influence the very mechanisms of rational thinking. Not only too much, but too little emotion can impair decision making. According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions.Part 1 of this book provides the intellectual framework for affective computing. It includes background on human emotions, requirements for emotionally intelligent computers, applications of affective computing, and moral and social questions raised by the technology. Part 2 discusses the design and construction of affective computers. Although this material is more technical than that in Part 1, the author has kept it less technical than typical scientific publications in order to make it accessible to newcomers. Topics in Part 2 include signal-based representations of emotions, human affect recognition as a pattern recognition and learning problem, recent and ongoing efforts to build models of emotion for synthesizing emotions in computers, and the new application area of affective wearable computers. Review Quotes "Compelling. . . . Picard convincingly demonstrates that computers can also be designed to think about feelings and how to rationally act in light of them. . . . Dxing on the Edge, Volume 1 - by Jeffrey Briggs (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 256Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: RadioFormat: PaperbackPublisher: BookbabyAge Range: AdultAuthor: Jeffrey BriggsLanguage: English Book Synopsis Any 160-meter enthusiast will tell you that operating on Topband, as it is called, is challenging, exciting and intriguing. Author Jeff Briggs, K1ZM, well known as a Topband expert, has compiled a book that will appeal to diehard 160-meter operators as well as those who have always wondered what goes on down there on the frequency spectrum. Indeed, the 160-meter aficionado is a special breed of operator. How do you know when you're a True-Blue 160-meter fan? One clue might be that you're finding yourself actually enjoying listening to static crashes... And you suspect you're on the edge when you wake up just before dawn for three months, just trying to make that seemingly impossible Topband DX QSO with Hong Kong or maybe Bangladesh! K1ZM has written this book as a fond dedication to one of the true pioneers on 160 meters, Stew Perry, W1BB, who is lovingly remembered by many people still on the air. DXing on the Edge chronicles W1BB's many accomplishments on Topband, plus those of numerous other early operators. Aside from detailed historical information, the author describes many practical antennas and operating techniques that can lead to success on 160. Like most of the ham bands, hearing the DX is the most challenging part of operating-and hearing well on Topband requires superior receiving antennas. Successful DXing can be accomplished even from a city lot, however, and the book includes lots of neat tricks and hints that will help you work the rare ones. About the Author Jeff Briggs, K1ZM, is a well-known 160-meter DXer and contester who developed a fascination with 160 meters in the late 1950s. Having read about the 160-meter accomplishments of W1BB in the pages of QST's How's DX? column, written by Rod Newkirk, W9BRD, Jeff dreamed of the day when he too could join in on the fun on Topband. As a teenager with only a receiver and no transmitter, this would not become possible until nearly 20 years later. While performing his military service from 1968 to 1972, Jeff used to listen to W1BB's enormous signal at sunrise in Bremerhaven, Germany. The receiving antenna there was a three-wire rhombic at 100 feet for 1.750 MHz. With such an antenna, signals from even the western USA were quite copiable in northern Germany. Still lacking a transmitter at that time, Jeff corresponded often with W1BB, who was kind enough to send him periodic copies of his famous 160-Meter Newsletter. This piqued Jeff's interest even more and at the 1973 New England ARRL Convention, he finally met Stew Perry in person. Stew was delivering a forum on the challenges of 160-meter DXing. A lengthy discussion ensued, some of which forms the basis for the early history of W1BB's career reported in this book. At the time, Stew Perry was 69 years old but still very active on Topband. K1ZM's personal affection for Stew Perry and a genuine respect for his achievements on 160 meters formed the impetus for the creation of this work. It is altogether fitting and appropriate that the story of W1BB and of his peers in the early years of 160-meter DXing be preserved for others to read about and enjoy. The author resides today in on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He is married with two children and can be found regularly on 160 meters pursuing his passion-chasing DX on Topband!
Engineering and Social Justice - (Synthesis Lectures on Engineering, Technology and Society) by Donna Riley (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 164Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: Social AspectsSeries Title: Synthesis Lectures on Engineering, Technology and SocietyFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Morgan & ClaypoolAge Range: AdultAuthor: Donna RileyLanguage: EnglishThe profession of engineering in the United States has historically served the status quo, feeding an ever-expanding materialistic and militaristic culture, remaining relatively unresponsive to public concerns, and without significant pressure for change from within. This book calls upon engineers to cultivate a passion for social justice and peace and to develop the skill and knowledge set needed to take practical action for change within the profession. Because many engineers do not receive education and training that support the kinds of critical thinking, reflective decision-making, and effective action necessary to achieve social change, engineers concerned with social justice can feel powerless and isolated as they remain complicit. Utilizing techniques from radical pedagogies of liberation and other movements for social justice, this book presents a roadmap for engineers to become empowered and engage one another in a process of learning and action for social justice and peace.
Technology Matters - (Mit Press) by David E Nye (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 282Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: Social AspectsSeries Title: Mit PressFormat: PaperbackPublisher: MIT PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: David E NyeLanguage: English About the Book Discusses in nontechnical language ten central questions about technology that illuminate what technology is and why it matters. Book Synopsis Discusses in nontechnical language ten central questions about technology that illuminate what technology is and why it matters.Technology matters, writes David Nye, because it is inseparable from being human. We have used tools for more than 100,000 years, and their central purpose has not always been to provide necessities. People excel at using old tools to solve new problems and at inventing new tools for more elegant solutions to old tasks. Perhaps this is because we are intimate with devices and machines from an early age--as children, we play with technological toys: trucks, cars, stoves, telephones, model railroads, Playstations. Through these machines we imagine ourselves into a creative relationship with the world. As adults, we retain this technological playfulness with gadgets and appliances--Blackberries, cell phones, GPS navigation systems in our cars.We use technology to shape our world, yet we think little about the choices we are making. In Technology Matters, Nye tackles ten central questions about our relationship to technology, integrating a half-century of ideas about technology into ten cogent and concise chapters, with wide-ranging historical examples from many societies. He asks: Can we define technology? Does technology shape us, or do we shape it? Is technology inevitable or unpredictable? (Why do experts often fail to get it right?)? How do historians understand it? Are we using modern technology to create cultural uniformity, or diversity? To create abundance, or an ecological crisis? To destroy jobs or create new opportunities? Should the market choose our technologies? Do advanced technologies make us more secure, or escalate dangers? Does ubiquitous technology expand our mental horizons, or encapsulate us in artifice? These large questions may have no final answers yet, but we need to wrestle with them--to live them, so that we may, as Rilke puts it, live along some distant day into the answers. Review Quotes Provocative...Nye's mission in this anecdote-rich, briskly analytical, and indignation-arousing overview is to make us think more critically about the boons and banes of technology and make our views known.--Donna Seaman--Nye's book addresses many of the issues and debates surrounding our highly textured technological society, and these are reflected in the questions he asks. Does technology control us? Does it lead to cultural uniformity or diversity? To sustainable abundance or to ecological crisis? To more security or escalating danger? The book is rich in examples, is easily readable and is short enough to be recommended for a day's read.--Nature--The incessant march of technology's evolution is the subject of David Nye's very readable book. It is written in the form of questions and expansive answers, with read like a primer (if not a discursive catechism) on what historians of technology have been thinking about over the half-century or so since their field was formalized. One of the striking effects of Nye's treatment is that it leads the reader to the incontrovertible conclusion that the answers to questions about technology evolve no less than technology itself. This is hardly surprising: thinking and writing about technology can be as creative a pursuit as inventing.--New Scientist-- About the Author David E. Nye is Senior Research Fellow at the Charles Babbage Institute and the History of Science and Technology program at the University of Minnesota and Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark. His other books published by the MIT Press include Electrifying America and American Technological Sublime. He was awarded the Leonardo da Vinci Medal in 2005 and was knighted by the Queen of Denmark in 2013.

Chicken - (Environmental History) by Paul R Josephson (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 252Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: AgricultureSeries Title: Environmental HistoryFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Polity PressAge Range: AdultBook theme: Animal HusbandryAuthor: Paul R JosephsonLanguage: English About the Book "The irresistible rise and fall of the world's favourite farm animal"-- Book Synopsis Why has the chicken become the meat par excellence, the most plentifully eaten and popular animal protein in the world, consumed from Beijing to Barcelona? As renowned historian Paul Josephson shows, the story of the chicken's rise involves a whole host of factors; from art, to nineteenth-century migration patterns to cold-war geopolitics. And whereas sheep needed too much space, or the cow was difficult to transport, these compact, lightweight birds produced relatively little waste, were easy to transport and could happily peck away in any urban back garden. Josephson tells this story from all sides: the transformation of the chicken from backyard scratcher to hyper-efficient industrial meat-product has been achieved due to the skill of entrepreneurs who first recognized the possibilities of chicken meat and the gene scientists who bred the plumpest and most fertile birds. But it has also been forced through by ruthless capitalists and lobbyists for "big farmer", at the expense of animal welfare and the environment. With no sign of our lust for chicken abating, we're now reaching a crisis point: billions of birds are slaughtered every year, after having lived lives that are nasty, brutish and short. The waste from these victims is polluting rivers and poisoning animals. We're now plunging "egg-first" into environmental disaster. Alongside this story Josephson tells another, of an animal with endearing characteristics who, arguably, can lay claim to being man's best friend long before the dog reared its snout or the cat came in from the cold. Lionized in medieval romances and modern cartoons, the chicken's relationship to humanity runs deep; by treating these animals as mere food products, we become less than human. Review Quotes Timely, important and forensically researched.Australian Book ReviewThis book swiftly and very readably outlines the century-long rise of [factory farming corporations] and the re-creation of the chicken into the worldÂs staple food. Josephson brings the various corporate and scientific personalities of his story alive, and despite the relatively breezy tone heÂs chosen to adopt, he never flinches from the ugly reality of his subject.Open Letters ReviewWise and scrupulously referenced. The Spectator Magazine About the Author Paul R. Josephson is a leading historian of science, technology, and of Soviet history, and the author of thirteen books. His research has taken him all over the world, from Siberia to Brazil, and from meat packing plants to nuclear reactors, lumber mills to hydroelectric power stations, to soy, fish and chicken farms, and from rain forest to tundra. Josephson is Professor of Russian and Soviet History at Colby College.
