As the final minutes of the fourth quarter wound down at Sun Life Stadium on a mild South Florida night, the Florida State senior class basked in the glory of the programs first win in a Bowl Championship Series game since 1999. In a span of four years, senior leaders like quarterback EJ Manuel, fullback Lonnie Pryor, and defensive tackle Everett Dawkins spearheaded a Seminole resurgence for the historically powerful program, lifting the Noles from a 7-6 record in 2009 all the way to a 12-2 mark, an Atlantic Coast Conference title, and a Discover Orange Bowl crown in 2012-13. Those seniors played a big role in FSU s 31-10 victory over Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl, helping the Noles out gain the Huskies 534 yards to 259 on the evening. On offense, Manuel threw for 291 yards and a touchdown and ran for another in his final game in Garnet and Gold, and Pryor was named the game s MVP after a heroic 134 yards and two scores on only five carries. Dawkins led a strong effort from the defense against quarterback Jordan Lynch and the Huskies, who were fresh off a high-scoring victory in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. Led by Lynch at the quarterback position, NIU earned itself a BCS bid with an outstanding season that ended with a 12-2 record. Following a season-opening loss, the Huskies rallied off 12 consecutive victories to stake their BCS claim, including a double-overtime triumph over No. 17 Kent State in the conference title game. Lynch threw for 176 yards and a touchdown while adding 44 more yards on the ground to battle NIU to within seven points as the game entered the fourth and final quarter. The Huskies stymied Florida State with a pooch punt from Lynch, a 35-yard run on a fake punt, and a 55-yard pass down the sideline to set up a score in the third quarter. Despite hitting several big plays, however, the FSU second-ranked defense was too strong to be beaten in the end. The Official 2013 Discover Orange Bowl includes the commercial-free game broadcast on DVD as well as the trophy presentation. It is a great addition to any fan's collection!
